Juan is working on modeling the occupancy in institutional buildings for optimal energy management. He is studying how to use low-cost sensors, variable classification techniques and novel algorithms to predict occupancy behaviour in order to minimize building energy consumption (e.g., the use of HVAC) while guaranteeing the users' comfort.

David's doctoral research improves how grid-connected inverters perform during voltage disturbances in electrical grids. He developed two key solutions: an advanced synchronization algorithm that quickly detects voltage variations during faults by combining a novel two-sample sequence extractor with a phase-locked loop and specialized filtering techniques; and a control strategy that manages current injection during voltage drops, prioritizing reactive power to support the grid while reducing power oscillations and stabilizing system voltage. Together, these innovations enable inverters to respond dynamically during faults, comply with modern grid codes, and enhance grid stability—critical capabilities as renewable energy becomes increasingly important to power systems.
